Immersive experience

Do you want to design experiences with a wow effect? Turn your story into experiences in healthcare, for example, for the entertainment and TV world, the gaming industry and museums?

In the new Immersive Experiences course, you will learn how to combine the latest technology with the real world to immerse users in an immersive experience. Think of a virtual set at a big musical in the theatre. A shop window that comes to life. An interactive game for companies. Or a simulation for training courses. Just where your interests lie. These specialists who can both design and create are in great demand.

The first year of the programme is a broad orientation year, which introduces you to all disciplines. From year 2, you can deepen your knowledge in the field of immersive designer or immersive technician.

What am I making?

As an Immersive experiences student, you will learn to create experiences for different applications and platforms. Think of virtual productions that combine the digital and real worlds. For example: a virtual escaperoom, a fashion show with holograms or an art installation in a museum. You can also work on film productions using new media such as real-time 3D. For companies, for example, you develop virtual training rooms to learn how to work with complicated machines, and in hospitals it is used for practising operations. Or a game for the entertainment industry.

What am I learning?

During the programme, you will not only learn to work with a wide range of interactive techniques, but you will also learn to tell a catchy story. Therefore, knowledge of psychology, colour theory and storytelling is also important. You will develop your ideas for your application and always put yourself in the user’s shoes to create a good experience. To realise your concept, you will use 3D interactive software (Unreal Engine and Blender), among others. You will also work with, for example, room sensors (physical computing) to develop interaction in space. You don’t just sit behind your laptop, but regularly go on excursions and work with other students on challenges for real companies. Besides vocational subjects, the programme also includes Dutch, English, maths and citizenship.

Outflow directions:

Immersive designer

As an immersive designer, you create designs for immersive experiences and convert concepts into visual and interactive elements. You empathise with the user and focus on storytelling and the intended psychological effects.

Immersive technician

As an immersive technician, you are particularly technically oriented and interested in the latest technologies for immersive experiences. The immersive technician converts immersive experience designs into interactive and multisensory products that are programmed, installed, connected, tested and maintained.

Where do I do my internship?

You will do your traineeship at leading companies throughout the Netherlands. From the Mediapark in Hilversum to a design studio in Eindhoven. You will work in a team of specialists to devise and realise immersive experiences for real clients. Think of a game studio, software company, audiovisual company, amusement park, museum or marketing agency. You will put the knowledge you have into practice and learn from your colleagues in the field of technology, design and user experiences to build impressive experiences.

What can I do after SintLucas?

There is high demand for immersive specialists in various fields. After your studies, you can work for various companies in the creative and technology sector. Besides companies specialising in the realisation of immersive experiences, you can also work for architectural firms, media companies, game studios and event organisations. For example, as an immersive designer, VR developer or technician in the field of physical computing. If you prefer to work for yourself, there are also many opportunities for freelancers to get involved in projects. If you prefer to continue studying, you can opt for a higher vocational programme in the field of, for example, interactive media, game design, game development or spatial design.

What should I be able to do and like?

Developing and building immersive experiences requires a team of professionals from different fields. You are therefore a team player who enjoys working with, for example, audiovisual designers, software developers, media designers and spatial designers. Naturally, you are curious about new technologies and their use and enjoy delving into complex issues with a large dose of creativity. Finally, you are flexible, a go-getter and someone who enjoys learning and experimenting.

How does application and admission work?

You apply from 31 October 2025 (09.00) via our website for the programme of your choice. After your application, you will receive an invitation for a matching interview at SintLucas. During an interview with a teacher and student from the study programme of your choice, we will check together whether you and SintLucas are a match. Above all, we have an open and relaxed conversation, so you can make a good study choice. In preparation for the interview, you can bring (creative) work with you. It is also possible to make an assignment. After the interview, you will receive a study advice. This advice can be positive (we think you fit in with SintLucas and the study programme) or negative (we think another school and study programme would suit you better). Even with a negative recommendation, you are admissible at SintLucas. We trust that you will make a good study choice with our advice. Read more about application and admission here.

If you have a question about this, please send an e-mail to aanmelding@sintlucas.nl.
